ASKED QUESTION ON THE PLANET
In the area of personal development and skill training there are many pitfalls. The material may be inappropriate, the training is boring or hard to apply, or even when it’s exciting and fun in a few short weeks the message fades and your momentum falters.
Hello, my name is Ollie Lind. I am a company coach and the founder of HowCanI. I am pleased to have this opportunity of sharing some important concepts with you that could have a profound effect on how successful you are, both personally and professionally.
It is a sad fact that well over half the training given is lost as described above.
When you are faced with the challenge of acquiring new skills, knowledge and abilities there is one question that is always asked.
HOW CAN I?
That is the principal question that, for so many, remains unanswered. As the late Dr Julius Sumner Miller, renowned physics teacher, used to ask, “Why is it so?”
All too often the answer supplied is a system or process of doing something.
If you just follow this method it will be all right. How many times have you heard that?
A system or process is fine, as long as the situation you are facing doesn’t change. For example, if you are learning negotiation skills it might be said you have a process to follow. It might be:
a) Have an established position.
b) Have a fall back position.
c) establish the other person’s position.
d) Seek agreement.
e) Focus on reducing the gap between your position and that of the other side.
That sounds pretty good doesn’t it? The problem is it doesn’t answer the question, “How can I?”
More importantly, it doesn’t tell you what you should do if the circumstances of the negotiation change. Why not?
Because you are given data and a process. You are not given any understanding of why people act as they do and what you can do to assist in a mutually beneficial resolution of the problem.
Here at HowCanI we have developed an approach that bridges the gap between simply following a process and actually understanding not only HOW, but WHY you take the actions you take to achieve your goal.
We base our approach primarily on the teachings of the finest mind that ever existed, Socrates. He, along with Plato and Aristotle, developed what is now the basis of Western thought.
YOU MUST NOT KNOW BEFORE YOU CAN KNOW
Simply stated, before you know anything you first are in a state of not knowing. That is why we learn. All knowledge comes from within.
Hold on a minute, I hear you saying. What about all the knowledge in books and films and universities and the like?
That is DATA.
That is INFORMATION WHEN IT IS PLACED INTO CATEGORIES.
It only becomes KNOWLEDGE when it is taken in by the individual and EVALUATED.
That can only be done by the individual. Therefore, all KNOWLEDGE and UNDERSTANDING comes from within.
When you are given a system or process you have the physical tools to do something. And the system may work in given circumstances. But if the situation changes, the system may become unworkable. This is one of the fundamental flaws in the Total Quality Management approach to the work environment. The fixation on unvarying process meant there was no room for flexibility or judgement. Why? Because there was no emphasis on human understanding.
THE ONLY REAL CONSTANT IN LIFE IS CHANGE!
At HOWCANI our approach is to pose questions in such a way that you will arrive at the answers to the question “How can I?”
It is what YOU DECIDE that is important.
It is what YOU ACHIEVE that is important.
The only person who can change what you do is YOU.
What you need is a clear pathway.

For example, take public speaking. It is recognized as the activity that strikes fear into the hearts of the most hardy individuals. Many courses offer systems to help you speak in public. Results are patchy, at best.
At HOWCANI we have produced a video that helps you understand what the fear is that paralyses so many people and how to ERASE THAT FEAR. There are no tricks, like ignoring the audience or imagining the audience is something other that what they are.
What happens is you are introduced to VIEWPOINTS that, if examined, take the MYSTERY and FEAR from public speaking. You will be able to download a workbook that, if you answer the questions and then, on a gradient scale, apply the concepts, you will become an ACCOMPLISHED PUBLIC SPEAKER.
