During the period of the imprisonment of Socrates he was surrounded by his students and admirers constantly. Except for one man. That man was Plato.

Many bitterly criticized Plato, accusing him of treachery and lack of faith in Socrates. Others thought that, because of the social prominence of his family, he stayed away so as not to offend them. The only one to defend Plato was Socrates himself. He alone understood why his friend could not visit him and be with him when he took his life.

Plato was so in awe of Socrates’ intellect and loved his friend so much he couldn’t bear to witness his decline and eventual demise. However, Plato did what no other man could have. He made sure that the philosophy of Socrates didn’t die with him.

He wrote The Dialogues, often regarded as the most brilliant examples of logic and reason ever written. In each dialogue Socrates would talk with a friend or pupil and he would ask about the true nature of one of the basic elements of life. Such questions as “What is love, beauty, justice and many more. He would then argue both sides of the debate.

Plato also expanded on Socrates’ teachings and evolved theories that are readily applicable today. One of the most telling of these was his theory of forms. I won’t go into detail here, except to say that Plato held that perfect knowledge was divine and was unknowable to man.

The practical application of that is the view that all knowledge comes from within the individual and the only reality is that perceived by the individual initially.
