Never Let Go

A couple of weeks ago I received a telephone call that had a profound impact upon me. It was an old friend I hadn’t spoken to for over two years. We had drifted apart for no good reason.
I was delighted to hear from her and was apologetic at neglecting her. Her reply was. “No matter, we’re talking now.” We made arrangements to meet at my gym. (we used to train together and I am still a fitness nut.)
I was early (I always am) and was on an exercise bike when she came in. I had my eyes shut at the time and when I opened them she was standing next to me, a broad smile on her face. I got off the bike and we threw our arms around each other and hugged.
I know most of the people at the gym and, as I released her, I was aware of many smiles focussed on us. We went to the stretching area and began our workout.
We now have arranged to meet each Sunday to have a workout and coffee afterwards.
Last Sunday I was early(again) and was again on the bike. This time, however, my eyes strayed to the entrance of the gym every couple of minutes. I realized it was inportant to me to see that lovely woman walk through the door.
This time she was early too (a rarity for her) and we went through the same hugging routine. I looked down at her (She is one of the few people I tower over) and said. “Thank you for coming back into my life.” She smiled and replied. “I’m glad too.”
I know this sounds all Mills and Boon, but I assure you, she is a dear friend. I care about her and she cares (apparently) about me. It’s like having a wonderful sister who has been absent for years and now has been found.
The point of my story is simply this. Don’t neglect your connections to those who care about you. You can miss out on so much joy simply through neglect. Make the effort to care for and about others and you will be repaid a hundredfold.
