Lesson

Isn’t it funny how life presents you with lessons  in the most unlikely ways? I recently received an e-mail from a sales consultant I was working with. His question seemed quite reasonable, but for some reason it jarred. So I thought about it before I replied.

His question went as follows. “I have put in a great deal of effort, as you requested I do. You tell me my focus and results are excellent. Thank you for the comment. When can I expect to see some benefit for me?”

On the surface it seemed a reasonable request. You work hard you should be rewarded. Then I realized what was wrong. His focus was on himself. He was shut off from others and his only concern was internal.

I wrote back as follows. “Focus internally on what you want. Focus externally on how you may serve.”

He has not replied as yet.

I am grateful to him for his question. It made me realize, once again, that the only way to be really successful is to focus on what you can do for others.

When your attention is fixed on yourself you don’t see others, or their needs and wants. You shut the door on the universe. If the door is shut no one or nothing may enter. Therefore he has shut the door on any reward the universe may have for him.

I would much rather be a man of worth than rich money-wise.
